Adidas Adizero Boston 10 First Impressions
The first time I saw leaked images of the Boston 10 it looked like a “Frankenstein” shoe with elements of it borrowed from other Adidas shoes.
The upper looked like previous, older versions of the Boston while its midsole looked as chunky as the Adios Pro’s midsole.
The real surprise was the inclusion of Energyrods inside its midsole, a feature which was previously exclusive to the Adios Pro.
I really like the look of the Boston 10. It manages to stand out from the crowd with its massive midsole and retro upper. The suede on the toe cap is very unique for a modern running shoe and makes it look like a lifestyle sneaker.
The first time I put the Boston 10 on my feet, it felt unlike any other Boston I’ve ever worn: it felt fresh and different (in a good way).
The fit was very accommodating and roomy with the length being longer than most running shoes in my normal size.
My first run was a 19 kilometre easy run. The ride felt firm but well-cushioned. It’s one of the heavier shoes I’ve tested recently but the weight didn’t bother me because it still felt efficient with its high toe-spring rocker.
The thing I enjoyed most on the first run was its stiff forefoot which had a little more flexibility than the Adios Pro but still felt snappy. I felt like I could easily increase my speed if I wanted to.
I went down to speeds of 4.15 per kilometre even though it was an easy run and the ride felt effortless at that pace.
Transitions felt very smooth and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the ride because on paper it’s a heavy, stiff, firm shoe.

ROBBE: Over the last decade, a lot has changed. Twitter went from a small spark of a startup to the world’s largest dumpster fire, GPS watches went from grandfather clocks on a wrist to half-dollar-sized life trackers, and shoe trends somehow went from gloves for toes to platform heels for racing. Throughout that time, the adidas Boston line has largely remained the same – one of the best shoes in the adidas lineup as a do-it-all, lightweight, uptempo trainer. For adidas fanbois and girls, it is beloved. If you’re one of them, you may want to take a chair. Because even though this is a Boston 10 review, it really isn’t.
Point being, if you’re used to the Boston trainer of old, this is a total revamp. For starters, the Boost midsole is gone, replaced by the most modern of adidas midsole materials, a combination of Lightstrike and Lightstrike Pro (plus some energyRODS, one word just to be cool). But most notably, this thing is no longer a lightweight daily trainer/tempo shoe. After gaining close to two ounces on last year’s version, this is now a mid-weight shoe that floats between daily trainer and tempo shoe, leaving the adizero adios as the cheese that stands alone in the adizero tempo category.
Now is that such a terrible thing? Maybe, maybe not. Let’s find out.
DAVE: I have got to say, this is a first for me today. This is my first shoe review written outside of the US. Kind of a milestone for all the years I’ve been rambling on. Sitting down here in Mexico, humid AF, it’s swamp ass city right now in our puebla. But I’m a true believer that shoes can be tested in all conditions, so having the Boston 10 on me down here has been nice (roads, jungle roads, hard packed singletrack, etc)
I’ve been a Boston fan for many years. Really, I’m a massive Boost fan. Boston 7 and 8 were arguably two of the best shoes ever created. Smooth, reliable, and never walked away feeling banged up by any means. Fast when you needed them, but could also be put on “cruise control” for an easy 75-90 minutes, mid week.
So then adidas started messing around with Lightstrike and Lightstrike Pro over the last 2 years. And while the Boston 9 was a good zapato, it was a little stale underfoot. Lightstrike was stale frankly. And although a ton of people loved it, for me, the Adizero Pro was straight garbage as well last year. My feet constantly fell asleep.
This leaves me a bit confused as to what exactly adidas is doing in the run line right now. Could too much creativity ruin the Boston 10?
Let’s tango.
THOMAS: These other fellas already covered the basics, let’s keep moving along.
Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Intro
Adidas was missing a very important cog in its performance running shoe machine which every other major shoe brand had. I’m talking about a training companion to their flagship marathon racer, the Adios Pro.
Most brands feel that it’s important to have a training companion with a similar ride to their carbon fibre racer but with better durability and a less jarring ride. It’s impractical to do daily training in a +$200 super shoe.
The Boston 10 has now become the more durable training companion to the Adios Pro 2.
The Boston 10 costs $80 less than the Adios Pro 2, has fibreglass Energyrods instead of carbon ones, thicker outsole rubber and a combination of Lightstrike Pro and Lightstrike in its midsole.
Now you’re probably asking, why the Boston? Why not create a completely new shoe like when Nike created the Tempo Next% to be the training companion of the Alphafly Next%?
One reason is that the name “Boston” is a great name for a running shoe: it’s short, catchy, memorable and is the city that hosts the legendary marathon.
I’m sure that many Boston loyalists will disagree with me but since the introduction of the lighter, more versatile Adidas SL20 two years ago, the Boston has become irrelevant.
What’s the point of having two lightweight, tempo trainers?
The Boston series had become stale. There’s only so many times that you can pair Boost with a firmer midsole foam and still expect it to sell well.
Boost feels like a dated midsole foam because it’s so heavy and there doesn’t seem to be a way to make it lighter.
I haven’t bought a Boston in years. There have been far better tempo trainers over the years like the Endorphin Speed and the Razor 3 which are more cushioned and more lively.
The Boston 10 shares nothing with its predecessor except for the name. The best way to think of the Boston 10 is as an Adios Pro Mini: less Lightstrike Pro foam, less stiff and less expensive.
Comparing the Boston 9 and 10 is like comparing apples and pears. The Boston 10 weighs 1.8 oz heavier, has 13.5 mm more heel stack height and costs $20 more.
So is the new, revamped Boston 10 a better Boston than previous versions and how good a training companion is it to the Adios Pro?
Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Conclusion
Upper issues aside, I enjoyed the Boston 10 a lot more than I thought I was going to and I managed to reach 50 miles in just 3 runs which is a record for me. This is testament to how much I enjoyed the shoe.
It doesn’t feel like a special shoe or have any standout features but as a whole, the Boston 10 is a daily trainer that gets the job done while making runs feel effortless and enjoyable.
I find myself wanting to do more runs in the Boston 10 even though I have other shoes to test.
Yes, it’s a heavy shoe but I don’t mind training in heavy shoes. Heavy shoes prevent me from running too fast on my easy runs and they make tempo runs easier when I switch to a lighter shoe because I’m used to a heavier trainer.
I enjoy the Boston 10 most for medium and long distance runs at steady or easy pace. That’s when the rocker combined with the Energyrods are most effective and save me energy.
Short, fast runs feel like a bit of a chore because of its heavy weight.
The Boston 10 does have some upper issues that you need to be aware of. It runs a half size large, has a loose heel fit and the tongue has durability problems.
I haven’t heard of the same tongue issue elsewhere so it could be that my pair was a faulty one.
The Boston 10 feels vastly different to any previous Boston and that’s a good thing. Running shoes need to adapt and evolve with the times.
There are new, groundbreaking technologies like Lightstrike Pro and Energyrods that Adidas shoes need to take advantage of. The Boston 10 does that.
If you really love the older Boston versions, you can always pick up the SL20.2 which is a lighter, cheaper, more traditional daily trainer.
I much prefer the Boston 10 because it has more cushioning and its ride is more exciting.
The Boston 10 is an excellent training companion to the Adios Pro. It delivers a similar ride but with much better durability, stability and is easier on the wallet.
Both shoes have similar rides with the main difference being that the Boston has a more flexible forefoot which is less jarring and feels more natural.
Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Sole Unit
The new jumbo midsole of the Boston 10 makes it much better for long distances. It can now handle marathon distances with ease while also being firm enough for medium-paced efforts.
The Boston 10 feels firmer than most popular daily trainers such as the Ghost, Pegasus and Cumulus and I feel like I’m not losing much energy with my foot sinking down into the foam. It feels more efficient.
I do wish that the midsole was slightly more forgiving. Whenever I switch out the insole to a thicker, Ortholite insole, the ride is much more enjoyable.
The top layer of Lightstrike Pro gives the ride a small amount of energy return while the Lightstrike on the bottom creates a firm, stable platform with less compression and more durability.
I especially enjoy the Boston 10 for medium and long distance runs. I always feel like I can go a little bit further at the end of my runs because of the energy-saving properties of the Energyrods combined with the stiff forefoot.
Ride transitions are really smooth and on long runs, the shoe helps me get into a rhythm so the kilometres just keep racking up without me realising.
I find the Boston 10 a little too heavy and too much shoe for short, tempo runs. The more nimble SL20.2 handles short runs better with its lighter weight and better ground feel- there is no ground feel in the Boston 10.
If you lift up the wafer-thin insole of the Boston 10, you can see the plate which extends from the heel to the midfoot.
There’s no mention anywhere what this plate is made of but it feels extremely hard. This plate makes the ride more stable but also makes the rearfoot feel firmer than the forefoot.
The fibreglass Energyrods inside the midsole are slightly flexible and are the perfect rigidity for a snappy feel.
To me, the ride feels more natural than shoes which have plates in them because the rods are aligned with the metatarsals of your foot.
The ride is very stable for a shoe with such a large stack height. What makes it so stable is its firm midsole foam and its raised Lightstrike Pro sidewalls that cup the foot.
This level of stability is impressive for a tall 39.5mm heel.
On the outsole, you get thick, hard-wearing Continental rubber which in my experience is one of the toughest outsole rubbers to ever exist.
The Boston 10 is a workhorse that can eat up hundreds of kilometres. I’ve put over 80 kilometres on my pair and the outsole looks almost brand new except for some abrasions on the outer lateral heel.
Traction is also first class. I ran in heavy rain numerous times during my testing and I never slipped once.
You get a window cutout on the midfoot which allows you to see into the Boston 10’s engine (its Energyrods) which is also a feature on the Adios Pro/Prime X and a nice touch.
Adidas Adizero Boston 3 Outsole
The Boston 3 has very durable carbon rubber on the heel and Continental Tire rubber on areas of high wear from mid foot through toe off. The Continental rubber is advertised to improve grip and I can’t attest that it performs better than typical outsole rubber. The outsole doesn’t have any major cutouts or grooves which could pick up large rocks or mud and after approximately 150 miles on the shoe the outsole does not show any wear and does grip quite well. I often ran on packed snow and I wasn’t slipping around as much as with other trainers. The low stack height also increases agility on snow or icy roads.
Adidas Adizero Boston 10 Conclusion
ROBBE: As I said, this is one of the harder reviews I’ve done. I just can’t place the shoe as far as performance. Its looks speak to a high-performance racer, but its weight and actual on-the-run feel says otherwise. That said, I would have no problem racking up a ton of summer miles in this thing, and it looks good as hell which is half the battle of winning me over on any shoe. But if you think this is your ye olde Boston, think again, and reset your expectations.
DAVE: Confused like Steve Harvey announcing Miss America. Adi had a great thing going! But I think they got a bit too fancy on this one. I really think the B10 has something nice going for it, even at the higher stacks and the LS/LSPRO combo. The energy rods create a bit of extra forefoot stiffness that is just not needed. I’ve been an Adi guy my whole life. Guess I’m just a little disappointed. Sometimes too much creativity can get you in trouble. In this case, it did.
Will I not run in it? Of course I will. But there are far better shoes in my arsenal that possess a bit more forefoot flex, and aren’t so harsh on my feet. My athlete, Paul Theiss said the same exact thing.
Word of advice to Adi? Be you. Stop chasing everyone else. Take the rods out. Hell, do you want me to get struck by lightning down here?
THOMAS: This isn’t the shoe I would design, but it turns out to be a shoe that I enjoy. Even though it is heavier than previous models, I like the way it runs. You can pick up the pace and for some runners, it will work for all your needs. Robbe mentioned it reminded him of the Peg 38. I would have to agree, but the Peg 38 is softer. The biggest compliment I can give to a shoe is to keep it in my rotation after a review. I look forward to putting more miles into the Boston 10 even after the review is posted. I have a feeling the Boston 10 might get better as the miles stack up.

Adidas Adizero Boston 3 First Impressions
After I got over the very loud color scheme of the new Adizero Boston I slipped them on and felt like I had just put on a marathon racing flat. The feeling of the Boston 3 is low to the ground due to reduced stack height from the Boston 2, and the cushioning initially felt very firm and minimal. The fit felt fantastic and I could tell that Adidas reduced weight in the upper making it more minimal. But, I was concerned that maybe they’d stripped the shoe down too much. Due to the fact that I try on LOTS of shoes each year and I get to review quite a number of them, I rarely change my mind from my first impression. However, my initial feelings about these shoes were absolutely wrong.
The Bad
ROBBE: So the bad, of course, is that this isn’t a Boston shoe in the traditional sense. If you’re used to that no-nonsense uptempo shoe from the past, that ship has left the tea party and is cruising the waters of Abaddon with the Nike Epic React and Peg Turbo 2.
While, yes, you can pick up the speed in this (like pretty much any shoe), and the energyRODS help quicken that transition, this is a daily trainer. And that’s fine if you aren’t expecting a Boston. But it would’ve been better to just not call this a Boston.
For such a mammoth stack of cushion, you’d probably expect something with more energy return or softness, neither of which are there. It’s just a firm shoe (though it seems to break in a bit once you get over 25 miles). I actually enjoyed the firmness, but I like a firm feeling shoe. I’m just saying that looks can be deceiving (similar to how the Saucony Endorphin Shift is also a pretty firm shoe).
Sizing is a bit large, almost in-between for me though. So I did have some foot security issues, but I don’t want to say it’s a bad thing because if I went a half-size up I believe all of that would resolve itself. If you want a more secure fit, go down a half size.
DAVE: Damn. That’s a lot of decent stuff above, huh? So here we go. Energy rods.
The first few runs, my right foot fell asleep. The rods are way too firm. I almost turned around two days in a row, completely pissed off that mechanically they made a good shoe, but “had to” follow the overused trend, and in my opinion – injury-producing –, “plate obsession.” I really don’t think the rods are needed. There is also a massive hole in the forefoot that exposed the rods; that could also get you in some “rock catching” trouble.
Now, all this said, after 63 miles, the shoe has woken up a bit. I had a great run in it this morning. But I have also not taken this up above 18 miles on a long run. A few of my athletes already have their hands on this shoe, and after some of their 2+ hour volume work on the weekends, they have reported some sensitive feet afterwards.
While 10.4 oz/295 g (US9) is heavy compared to previous Boston’s by 2oz or more, it works. But if the Boston series was always a lower profile fast daily trainer, why the change? Keep this stuff light!
THOMAS: My guess is that since the size 10 fits me, you may find that the sizing is off a little. You will want to try your size and a half size down. I do wish the foam had a little more give, I think it would help you feel the energyRODS a little more. Perhaps give the Boston 10 a little more of a snappy load and release feel.

Adidas Adizero Boston 3 Midsole
Adidas used its Adiprene EVA foam cushioning, which is firm yet responsive, throughout the entire length of the Boston 3. I especially appreciated the increased cushioning throughout the forefoot and the full length Adiprene really gives the Boston 3 a nice ride. Midfoot and forefoot strikers will especially love the firm ride which gives a sense of proprioception and feel for the road. Heel strikers will like the decoupled and well cushioned heel which also aids in a smooth transition through the foot plant.
Adidas uses its Torsion Bar in the mid foot which helps stabilize the shoe. Mild overpronators, like myself, can get away with wearing the Boston 3, while those needing more stability will likely find it a great marathon racing shoe but too minimal for daily training.
Adidas Adizero Boston 3 Overall Impressions
As I stated before, I rarely feel differently about a shoe after running 100 miles in it then I do when trying it on. But, every once in awhile a shoe surprises me. The Boston 3 impressed me most with its firm and resilient cushioning, fit, and very lightweight feel. In fact, the more I wore them I found myself subconsciously reaching for them each morning and neglecting my other trainers. I’ve worn the Boston 3 on several longer runs (12-16 miles), short tempo runs, and fartlek on trails. In each situation they responded very well and the very smooth transition of this shoe lends itself to fast running. I was never surprised that my pace crept faster and faster into unintentional progression runs when wearing the Boston 3.
This is a perfect shoe for high mileage efficient runners with neutral or slight pronating gaits. For those who need a little bit more support I would highly recommend this shoe for racing, especially the marathon distance, as the Boston 3 can take a beating. Right at 10 oz for my size 9.5 the Boston 3 feels lighter than it is due to its minimal upper and low profile and after 150 miles I’m continually impressed with its performance.

Adidas Adizero Boston 3 Upper
Stripped down, flexible, and breathable are a few words I would use to describe this well fitting upper. Adidas changed the overlays a little for this third incarnation but kept a mostly mesh upper with synthetic reinforcements in the toe and heel cup. The mesh of the Boston 3 seems to be a bit thinner and more breathable but maintains durability. Adidas uses their usual fit and last for the Boston 3 with a narrow heel, snug mid foot, and wide toe box. The loose and comfortable mesh does allow some give and really seemed to form to my foot the more I ran in the shoes.
The heel collar and tongue of the Boston 3 is thin, pliable, and very comfortable. Adidas keeps the tongue thin and lightweight and uses flat laces which do not cause any discomfort on the tops of my feet.
